What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a feeling characterized by nervousness, worry, uneasiness, and apprehension. It is a normal human emotion that everybody experiences. However, individuals with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) tend to worry so excessively that it inhibits their ability to lead healthy and productive lives. Symptoms of GAD include excessive worry on most days, restlessness, feeling easily fatigued, having difficulty concentrating, and experiencing irritability, muscle tension, and difficulty sleeping. Physical symptoms of anxiety can include chest tightness, tremors, racing heart, and shortness of breath.
How is Generalized Anxiety Disorder treated?
Like most mental health conditions, GAD is best treated with a combination of psychotherapy and medication management. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the first line of treatment for GAD. Your provider may also incorporate evidence-based psychotherapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
