What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, is a mental disorder which is characterized by a pattern of recurrent, intrusive and distressing thoughts that an individual attempts to alleviate by performing repetitive behavior or rituals. For example, an individual with obsessive-compulsive disorder may have a recurring fear of germs and subsequently, feel compelled to wash their hands excessively. Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder may have a difficult time being flexible and may oftentimes become distressed when they are unable to perform their ritualistic behaviors. There are several different sub-types of obsessive-compulsive disorder such as hoarding and compulsive sexual-behavior.
How is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Treated?
Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder tend to do best with a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and high doses of medications known as selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps an individual make changes to their patterns of thought which in turn, cause a decrease in emotional distress. Medication can also be an effective way to decrease the frequency and severity of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Many individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder can grow to lead happy and successful lives with the appropriate combination of interventions and clinical support.
